"I've been Charged with a Crime..."

What Should you Do Now?

1) Do not speak to anybody about your case until you have consulted with an attorney. Whether or not you were given your Miranda warnings, anything you say or admit can be used against you—even by your family and friends if they were to be subpoenaed. This means ANYTHING you say: information you believe helps you or your case may later be twisted around to hurt you. To protect yourself, say nothing at all.

2) If you are contacted by a police officer, detective, insurance agent, investigator or anybody you did not directly employ to represent you, politely decline to speak with them.

3) Open a word processing document. Title it "Attorney-Client Work Product." Draft a brief explanation of the events that led up to your arrest, what happened during your arrest, and what happened while you were in jail.

Set-Up an Appointment

Please have the following information available so we can be of better help to you during our telephone conversation:

1) How you were released from jail;
2) The charge(s) you were arrested for;
3) Your cause number(s) [in the upper right hand corner of your bond paperwork];
4) Your court date(s);
5) Information about any previous arrests or convictions (if applicable); and
6) Biographical, employment, and contact information.

We will also ask if you have ever hired or consulted with lawyers before so that we may tailor the answers to your questions accordingly. We will then schedule an appointment for our first meeting. After our conversation, we will e-mail you a .pdf file with additional questions and materials to bring to our first meeting. We ask that you respond to these questions prior to our meeting.

Our office hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and we can be reached during these hours at (512) 381-9955. For after-hour emergencies (e.g., getting someone out of jail) please call (512) 536-1374.
