Assault by Contact and Assault by Threat

Many people would be surprised to learn that one does not need to physically contact another in order to commit assault.  Simply threatening someone with bodily injury could be enough.  Knocking a plate out of another person’s hand could also be defined as assault if the intent is to offend or provoke.
