What Our Clients Say - Testimonials

Consequences

All felonies carry the possibility of very strict punishment including lengthy terms of imprisonment, large fines, and even death. The least severe felony, a state jail felony, is punishable by confinement in a state jail facility for 180 days to 2 years and/or a fine of up to $10,000. A 3rd or 2nd degree felony carries a punishment range of 2 to 10 years in prison and 2 to 20 years in prison respectively, as well as a fine of up to $10,000. A 1st degree felony has a punishment range of life or 5 to 99 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. A capital felony is punishable by life in prison or death.

Beyond the direct consequences listed above are indirect or “collateral” consequences that can occur as a result of a felony conviction. A person convicted of a felony can be legally prevented from working in many types of jobs. Eligibility for public housing can be denied based upon a person’s criminal background. Certain criminal convictions can prevent an individual from being approved as a foster or adoptive parent.

The bottom line is that a person convicted of a felony faces severe consequences and in many ways is never forgiven for his or her crime. The conviction can never be erased or the record cleaned, and the consequences are lifelong.
